It’s here! Finally!! SPRING has bestowed itself on our area after what seems like the longest winter yet! Okay, it actually seems like it skipped straight to summer with these 80 degree temps….you won’t hear me complaining! 😉 Spring means engagement season around here, and with a few dozen shoots in the next few weeks + months, we thought it would be helpful to share some words of wisdom + tips as you’re preparing for your engagement shoot 🙂
1. Relax and have fun.
I know this sounds cliche, but if you approach your session with an up-for-anything attitude, ready to have fun and love on your fiance for 2 hours, it will show on camera, in a good way!! We know it’s a little uncomfortable to start out, especially if you’ve never had professional photos taken before, but I promise that Tim and I are super laid back on e-shoots and there’s NOTHING to be nervous about! We guide you through every pose + setting, so don’t be nervous about feeling awkward. A positive attitude will go such a long way towards creating amazing photos. When you feel nervous, just look at your fiancee and smile. You’re in this together, and we all have the same goal. 🙂
2. Pick outfits creatively.
The best photos have a pop or sparkle to them, and in addition to the lighting / setting / you two being all cute and in love, your outfits add a huge statement to your photos! I always suggest a pop of color for the girl, a big statement piece like awesome shoes or a killer necklace, and texture. For guys, a button down plaid shirt over a v neck is always a great option, and add a vest if you want to make the look more dressy. The more layered / artistic your outfits, the more pizazz your photos will have. Having trouble finding perfect outfits? Ask your friend….the one with really cute outfits…to go shopping with you! Another eye is sometimes helpful when picking corresponding outfits. Oh, and it probably goes without saying, but don’t MATCH. Corresponding colors / textures / patterns are the way to go! We actually have a pinterest board for inspiration if you’d like to take a look HERE.
3. Put some thought into the location of your engagement shoot.
We always start by asking our couples if there’s a special place that’s close to their hearts, and if nothing comes immediately to mind (that would also work for awesome photos!), we’re always happy to offer suggestions. We have tons of places to recommend based on the look you’re going for – urban, funky, rustic, garden, open fields, beach…we’re up for anything! The location does a lot to determine the “feel” of your photos, so think about that when we’re deciding together the location of your engagement.
4. Banish all those negative thoughts.
Maybe you’ve had your photo taken before, and didn’t love it. Maybe you always think your arms look fat in photos. Maybe…..and the list goes on. But I can tell you — this shoot is about you and the person you love more than anything in the world spending time creating photos of THIS time in your life. Not your wedding day, not when you have kids, not when you lose 5 pounds, but this time right now — celebrating being head over heels in love with your whole life ahead of you. Together. The less you focus on yourself and insecurities, the MORE beautiful you will look on camera. There’s nothing as sweet as a couple so in love that all their attention is focused on their partner. We will do everything in our power to make you feel beautiful + relaxed on your shoot – that’s our job! Your job is to love on your partner 🙂
5. Trust your photographer.
We often ask our couples to do crazy things to get a great shot, whether it’s climbing on top of a building, hopping over a fence, or laying on the ground while we climb above you. Inspiration strikes while we’re shooting, and I can promise we won’t ask you to do anything that makes you look silly. (US, on the other hand, is another story! We constantly look ridiculous while getting these kind of shots.) Trust us and we think it will be worth it 🙂
5. Want something more unique?
We LOVE when our couples want to do something a little outside the box for their engagement session. We also love traveling to amazing places to shoot your engagement – why not, right?? We’ve shot engagements in California, Ohio, South Carolina, and we’re heading to Scotland in May…if you want to bring us somewhere awesome for your e-session, trust us – we want to come!! In addition though, we can come up with an amazing styled shoot, incorporate a theme or a love for a hobby or activity you love doing together, and really create a stylish + unique shoot. Just let us know your thoughts, and we’ll come up with something amazing together.
